Within 3 days people started getting sick

A friend just returned from a family reunion with 53 people in attendance. Within 3 days, people started getting sick. Not all of the symptoms were exactly the same but the complaints in general were low grade fevers, sore throat, headaches, body aches, fatigue, cough, stuffy nose, & sneezing. Everyone was “tested” on the 4th day & 12 people were positive & ill (5 others were positive but not ill & the rest were negative & not ill). Others became ill on days 5 & 6. My first thought was food poisoning but not everyone got sick & there was no vomiting, cramping, diarrhea, or nausea. What could have caused so much illness? And what exactly is the “test” picking up? I’m baffled. Thank you for any insight.

Terrain answer:

Far more likely to be an environmental toxins than food in a case like this. Disinfectant used to clean the area, air freshner, something in the ventilation system (mold, cleaner, etc).
Stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing usually these are something you inhaled.

Test picks up human DNA. Different number of cycles ran means different “positives”. No correlation to disease, symptoms or exposure. It’s just how much of a particular strand of human DNA did they replicate.
